A couple of years ago, a small group of people, including an old friend, a friend of a friend, and a friend of a friend, had been trying to get the name of a prescription-only treatment for impotence from the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
They were told by the MHRA that they had received a ‘strong’ warning from the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the latest issue ofThe New England Journal of Medicineabout the use of an impotence drug for which the drug manufacturer had no licence. As a result, they had to be prescribed a prescription to the drug for which they had no licence. The MHRA, however, had warned against using an impotence drug for which the drug manufacturer had no licence.
In the latest issue ofthe MHRA had warned that the use of ‘sildenafil’ in Viagra is ‘very unlikely’ to pose a ‘serious threat to public health’ and ‘harm to patients’ and ‘harm to their communities’, although the use was not shown to be an ‘off-label’ use of the drug.
The report was released on the same day, and was authored by Dr Ian Thompson, a chemist and lecturer at the Royal Free University, in London.
He was quoted as saying: “Viagra has been in the UK for about 10 years and is now available for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
“There is no evidence that it is unsafe for patients to use it.”
The report is published on the NHS website.
A spokesperson for the MHRA said that the ‘proved and proven’ use of sildenafil is ‘well tolerated’ but added that the report was ‘important’ and that ‘the use of sildenafil is not likely to be harmful’.
The prescription for sildenafil for impotence has not yet been reviewed by the MHRA and so ‘no NHS guidance’ on its use in prescribing sildenafil, the spokesperson added.
The report also did not state the maximum dosage of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction. But it did say that ‘the maximum recommended dose of sildenafil is 100mg and that no dose is required for more than 30 minutes of treatment, at which point the dose should be gradually increased to a maximum dose of 100mg’.
The prescription for Viagra, as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, was sent to a member of the public from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The MHRA was not able to review the prescription of sildenafil, and it was therefore not able to determine if the drug had any potential side effects.
The NHS websiteNHS-medicines-homes.orghas been updated to reflect new information about sildenafil, the latest published by the MHRA.The update was for the NHS website, which was updated to reflect information about the drug’s potential side effects. It is expected that these side effects will be reported to the MHRA at a later date.
The MHRA has not yet received any response to the NHS-medicines-homes.org update.
A spokesperson for the MHRA said: “There is no evidence to suggest that sildenafil is unsafe for use in patients with ED. There is a risk that this drug could cause serious adverse events such as priapism and cardiovascular events, which could be fatal.”
